The Minister of Economy and Finance, José Arista, asked the President of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), Julio Velarde, to be more “proactive” in reducing the interest rate of the entity, considering that, being high, it does not help economic reactivation.

It is worth noting that the BCRP board cut the reference interest rate by 25 basis points, reaching 5.75% for May.

Likewise, he referred to Velarde’s forecasts for the estimated inflation for this year, setting it between 2% and 2.2%. “If Julio Velarde says it, we must believe it, hopefully, he doesn’t make as many mistakes as last year,” he said.

In this line, it is necessary to mention that the 12-month inflation rate decreased from 3% in March to 2.4% in April, thus falling within the target range.
